Fire extinguishers should only be used when a fire is small and in its beginning stage. Knowing how to operate your fire extinguisher is crucial to saving lives and property.

  • Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher to release the locking mechanism
  • Aim at the base of the fire to extinguisher the fuel
  • Squeeze the lever slowly to release the extinguisher agent
  • Sweep from side to side until the fire is completely out

NFPA code states fire extinguishers should be inspected once a year by a professional.
You can only perform the monthly inspections, which includes verifying the extinguisher is where it should be, if it has been used or tampered with, and if there is any psychical damage. However, a certified service company with a certificate of fitness must perform the annual inspection.
